Jazz Beyond Bebop: New Directions & Styles of the 50s-70s

Wednesdays, 1 - 3 pm

Facilitator: Henry Ettman

Join our exploration of the remarkable period in jazz after swing and bebop, the 50s into the 70s when jazz blossomed into a cornucopia of styles and became a cornerstone of American music. We’ll illuminate the development of exciting new genres including hard bop, Latin and jazz/rock fusion, avant-garde, and evolving trends in mainstream jazz. The influence of the jazz education movement as well as major social and political changes in America that impacted jazz and other arts will be explored. Musical examples, archival videos and lively discussion (some with special guests from St. Louis’ jazz world) will enrich our experience.
