East of Eden

Tuesdays, 1 - 3 pm

Facilitator: Jan Jacobi

John Steinbeck led the writer’s life. In his journal, as he approached East of Eden, he wrote that, as a novelist, he had one great book to write. For him it was East of Eden. It is the story of two families (one his own) in the California of the early twentieth century. Given the title, there are biblical parallels. In this class, we will read East of Eden as if we were a book club, with the emphasis of our discussion being sharing what we find in the book. Please read part 1 (chapters 1-11) for the first class, and please bring a notebook to class.
