African American Literature: “Lost” Plays of the Harlem Renaissance (1920-1940)

Mondays, 1 – 3 pm

Facilitators: Susan Bromberg/Brenda Lambert

African American playwrights of the Harlem Renaissance wrote about the era’s political and social climate, including women’s rights and roles, labor unions, unemployment, migration North, lynching, and racial discrimination. Much of this work was re-discovered only recently. The plays represent a range of styles: tragedy, social realism, comedy, romance, and blues opera.   Join us to read a sampling of these “lost” plays and discuss their relevance today. Selections include the work of celebrated writers like Langston Hughes as well as lesser known artists.  Please note that participants in this course are asked to wear masks.

Textbook: A course manual including the featured works is required at a cost of $20.
