Rise Up Singing: Social Movements and Favorite Genres in American Folk Music
Mondays, 1 - 3 pm
Facilitator: Beth Powell
Four OLLI members—Cindy Graham, Jerry Liberstein, Beth Powell and Cathy Reilly—will share their expertise and enthusiasm for an in-depth look at some of our folk music favorites, and why they flourished. Topics addressed include: southern gospel and its African-American connections, how folk music addressed social issues, a look at the career of Bob Dylan, and songs originating in other cultures.
Numerous journals have documented the social and psychobiological effects of group singing—on mood, social connectedness, and stress. To leverage this benefit, there will be an opportunity to sing along with pre-selected works at designated points in the class.
