“The Bolognese Phenomenon”: Women Artists in Early Modern Bologna

Fridays, 10 am - 12 pm

Facilitator: Anna Amelung

Following the recent groundbreaking research of Babette Bohn, this course will present several women artists who thrived in Bologna between the 15th and the 18th centuries. We will focus on Properzia de’ Rossi, Lavinia Fontana, and Elisabetta Sirani, and their public recognition as being “more perfect and excellent than men.” As we examine them, we will stress the Bolognese civic structures which allowed these women to be successful and, at the same time, we will attempt to answer questions still relevant today such as how to establish a nurturing and supportive community appreciative of female artistic achievements.
