The Modernization of Paris by Baron Haussmann: Urban Planning & Literature

Beginning around 1850, Emperor Napoleon III chose Baron Haussmann to carry out a massive urban renewal of Paris which dramatically transformed the capital. In this class we will analyze the main aspects of Haussmann’s urban planning, its connection to the Second Empire, and its subsequent literary depictions by Émile Zola and Guy de Maupassant. We will also read and discuss a novel by Émile Zola, The Kill (La Curée, 1872). In addition, we will watch excerpts from the movie by Roger Vadim, The Game is Over, a 1960s’ adaptation of Zola’s story starring Jane Fonda.
