French Art Deco: “The Modern Style”

Fridays, 10 am - 12 pm

Facilitator: Anna Amelung

Born out of the impulse to create “modern” design adapted to a fast-paced and industrialized world, Art Deco, combining art and craft, exploded internationally at the 1925 Paris Exhibit. In this course we will examine some key elements of French Art Deco, from the architecture of Le Corbusier to the cinematography of Marcel L’Herbier, from the interior decoration of Ruhlmann to the fashion of Poiret, including everyday industrial design and the exclusive jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels. We will also take a closer look at the most popular French designers of the time such as Barbier, Dufy, Dupuis, Lalique, and Iribe.
