Banned Books

Wednesdays, 1 - 3 pm

Facilitator: Pat Magee

Over the course of eight weeks, we will read four books deemed controversial at the time of publication and, in some quarters, even now.  We will discuss the topics, the times, the possible motivations of the authors, and how each was received when first published.  A summary of each book and a biography of the author will be provided on the second class-day we are discussing that title. To approach each work with an open mind and without preconceived ideas of the author’s intent, it is recommended that you do not read analyses of the books or biographies of the authors prior to our class discussion.

Textbooks:
1984 by George Orwell
Catch 22 by Joseph Heller
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie.
